Hi! This is a newsletter about artists I like.
I began acquiring art through some friends who worked in galleries. I started small, working on a limited budget for stuff I could afford. As time passed, my collection grew, and it was exciting to watch many of the artists I'd collected go on to bigger shows and critical acclaim. My goal with this newsletter is to make a digestible resource for anyone interested in artists making excellent (and still affordable!) work whom you haven't heard about... yet.
I’m not sure when I did a post on Dunes, but I do remember meeting Boru, the owner, at Nada in Miami around this time last year. I went with my friend Ty Williams, also a past guest, and Boru and Ty chatted about their mutual pals and such.
I’m a huge fan of Boru’s gallery and a firm believer in creating a space like his in a city that clearly craves it and nourishes art and artists. I ended up buying a couple of things from Boru and have been annoying him ever since.
About 4 or 5 months ago, Boru saw me posting about some art books I was selling over on Goodstuff, my IG account where I have been doing that for about 15 years or so. He said he had an idea for something for the holidays and I just said I was in no matter what.
I shipped about 350 books, give or take, to Dunes in Portland, Maine and got to go up there for the opening a couple of weekends ago. Thank you Boru and Sam for the incredible build out and furniture building. And thank you to the Dunes team for all the hard work in getting this show to look the way it does! I did about 2 % of the actual work.
Some of my favorite artists around are also taking part like Peter Shear and Emily Ferguson. Boru worked tirelessly to make this feel special and not look like a couple of book hoarders threw out their goods. All the furniture made by Boru himself, not easy.
I feel incredibly lucky to get to show/sell these books alongside Roger who is the founding editor for art and architecture at MIT Press. His eye and knowledge are second to none and was in complete awe of just a sampling of what he brought to Dunes.
The book and art show as I like to call it will be up in 2025 but if you don’t think you will make it, you can still shop online through Dunes website. Boru and his amazing team spent hours getting the inventory up for sale online.
The books I brought are a culmination of what I find interesting so that ranges from art, architecture, photography, interior design, craft, and books that I find interesting. There are books for $20 up to the thousands. I really believe books make incredible gifts and Dunes has you covered there.
I wanted to shoutout Ty Williams for being an incredible host and taking me and my incredible wife, who puts up with my book hoarding, to some amazing Portland spots. It was a wonderful weekend and can’t say enough great things about that city. I love Ty’s work and if you need a great gift idea that doesn’t break the bank but you can literally buy for anyone and they will be impressed. This is it.
You remain awesome and inspiring to me.
